Damian G. Romero, Ph.D., FAHA, FAPS, is Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), where he also serves as Assistant Director of the Women’s Health Research Center and Core Director of the Mississippi Center of Excellence in Perinatal Research. He earned his Licentiate and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Molecular Biology from the University of Buenos Aires, followed by postdoctoral training in Molecular Endocrinology at UMMC before joining the faculty.
Dr. Romero’s research program focuses on the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms driving cardiometabolic complications in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), with a particular emphasis on the role of microRNAs and novel therapeutic approaches. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society, and he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters.
He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and the American Physiological Society, and his honors include the Mead-Johnson Research Award and the Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Award from the American Physiological Society, as well as multiple institutional awards for research and teaching excellence. In addition to his scientific contributions, Dr. Romero serves as Associate Editor for “American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism”, “Frontiers in Endocrinology”, and on the editorial boards of “Biology of Sex Differences” and “Annals of Translational Medicine”.
