Michael Roden graduated from University of Vienna, Austria, was trained at General Hospital Vienna and as Max-Kade fellow at Yale University. He is certified in internal medicine, endocrinology/diabetology/metabolic disease and clinical pharmacology and was head of the 1st medical department at the university teaching hospital, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna. Since 2008, he is chair/full professor of endocrinology and metabolic diseases, director of the division of endocrinology and diabetology at Heinrich-Heine University Hospital Düsseldorf, Germany, currently also heading the department of medical clinics. Simultaneously, he is CEO of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) and a speaker of the German Centers of Diabetes Research. His translational research addresses insulin resistance, energy metabolism, precision medicine in diabetes and comorbidities, particularly steatotic liver diseases. He has published >800 peer-reviewed papers (e.g. in NEJM, Nature, Lancet,…), is a Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate) and received several awards (e.g. Oskar-Minkowski Prize, G.B.Morgagni Gold Medal, Paul-Langerhans Medal…). He holds honorary doctorates of the Universities of Athens and Belgrade, honorary membership of the Hungarian Diabetes Association and collaborative professorship of Kanasawa University. Professor Roden was honorary treasurer of European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), chairman of its foundation (EFSD) and president of the Central European Diabetes Association, the Austrian Diabetes Association and Congress President of German Diabetes Association. He served as head of the Committee Medicine of the German Council of Science and Humanities, appointed by the President of Germany and was selected as member of Academia Europea and German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
