Ole-Petter Hamnvik, MB BCh BAO, MMSc, MRCPI, is a clinician-educator and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, practicing in the MGB Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in Boston, Massachusetts. A native of Norway, he received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and endocrinology fellowship at BWH.
Dr. Hamnvik serves as the Education Director of the Mass General Brigham Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and as the Program Director for the BWH Endocrinology Fellowship. He has held national educational leadership roles including serving as Education Editor for NEJM Group and serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism (APDEM). He worked with the Endocrine Society's Fellows' Training Series to develop the transgender health curriculum now used by endocrinology fellows across the United States. He has also served on national committees focused on continuing medical education and board certification.
Clinically, Dr. Hamnvik's practice is focused on general endocrinology and gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender and gender-diverse individuals. He was a founding leader of the BWH Center for Transgender Health and has contributed to national and international guideline development, including contributing to the International Society of Clinical Densitometry's official position on bone health in transgender patients. He has served on the steering committee for the Global Education Institute of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), leading educational initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities and improving access to care for transgender communities.
