My name is Nathan Winn, PhD. I am an Asssitant Professor in ther Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. My lab is broadly interested in how obesity increases the risk of cardiometabolic disease. We seek to understand mechanisms that control nutrient metabolism in these conditions. One focus of my research program is to unravel physiological mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and inflammation, which are hallmarks of metabolic diseases. In addition, we are interested in defining how prior obesity ‘obesogenic memory’ influences future disease susceptibility and response to treatments. Our research leverages targeted genetic models with mechanistic in vivo platforms to study how metabolic systems interact to regulate nutrient homeostasis in health and disease. Cell systems are used as needed to gain a more complete understanding of intracellular metabolic regulation. This integrated approach to study disease is necessary for eventual application to the human condition.
