This session will explore the intersection of insulin resistance and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), two key predictors of metabolic disease and mortality. Speakers will examine mechanistic, clinical, and translational insights into mitochondrial function, muscle insulin signaling, and aerobic capacity. The session will also address the impact of exercise and medications (e.g. metformin and GLP-1RAs), emphasizing the importance of targeting both insulin sensitivity and CRF to improve metabolic health.
Learning Objectives
Describe the mechanistic links between mitochondrial function, skeletal muscle insulin signaling, and cardiorespiratory fitness.
Evaluate the impact of exercise and pharmacologic interventions, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, on insulin resistance and aerobic capacity.
Identify clinical and research strategies that simultaneously target insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness to reduce metabolic disease risk.
