Carstyn Joiner is a PhD Candidate in the Cancer Biology Program at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research focuses on mechanisms of metastatic progression and therapeutic resistance in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, with an emphasis on fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) signaling in liver metastasis. Using a novel immunocompetent rat model of metastatic ER+ breast cancer, her work integrates transcriptomic, genomic, and functional approaches to identify mechanisms driving metastasis and resistance to endocrine and CDK4/6-targeted therapies. Her research aims to inform the development of rational combination therapies for metastatic breast cancer. Carstyn has presented her work at national scientific meetings, including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and has received recognition through competitive awards and fellowships, including an NIH F31 fellowship application in fundable range and multiple travel and presentation awards.
