Marie E. McDonnell, MD, is Chief of the Diabetes Section at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) within the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at MassGeneralBrigham and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. McDonnell provides clinical, academic, and administrative leadership of the hospital-wide diabetes program. A graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia residency program, and Endocrinology fellowship at Boston Medical Center, Dr. McDonnell’s research includes how health systems can deliver more effective, evidence based diabetes care services across acute and ambulatory settings and has served on several clinical guideline development panels through organizations such as the Endocrine Society, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the World Health Organization. Dr. McDonnell also collaborates on numerous multicenter studies and large studies in population science. She teaches medical students at Harvard Medical School, is key faculty for both the Medicine and Endocrinology training programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as well as for the Endocrine Society's Endocrine Board Review program, and has received recognition for her mentorship of junior faculty. Clinically she is a physician leader in the Diabetes in Pregnancy and Pancreas Transplantation programs at BWH. She delivers multiple local, regional and international lectures and CME conferences per year in the field of Diabetes Care and is currently on the writing committee on the Endocrine Society Guideline for the pharmacologic management of Obesity.
