Dr. Matthew Drake is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Director of the Metabolic Bone Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York.
Dr. Drake received his AB degree from Harvard University and his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Duke University under the Clinical Investigator Pathway. He completed his Endocrinology fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic, where he subsequently joined the faculty and practiced for 17 years, including serving as head of the Bone Core Group within the Division of Endocrinology for 10 years preceding his arrival at HSS.
Dr. Drake is an accomplished clinical investigator who works at the interface of endocrine, metabolic bone disease, and oncology conducting research on disorders of skeletal mineral metabolism, with a focus on cancer-associated bone loss. His translational research also focuses on age-related bone loss and understanding the impact of monoclonal gammopathies on skeletal health and fracture risk.
Dr. Drake has published more than 140 manuscripts and has undertaken leadership roles in clinical care guidelines for the Endocrine Society as well as the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). As an active clinician, Dr. Drake cares for patients with metabolic and rare bone diseases as well as patients with cancers that affect the skeleton. He has served as Chair of the ASBMR Professional Practice Committee, as a member of the ASBMR Council, and is currently serving as co-chair of the ASBMR task force on denosumab discontinuation. He is currently Deputy Editor of JBMR Plus, and also serves on the ABIM Endocrine Examination Committee and the FDA Endocrine and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee.
