Professor Alex Comninos is a Consultant Endocrinologist & Professor of Practice at Imperial College London. His research focuses on reproductive hormones and their influence on behaviour and bones. He has authored >100 research publications and has led and contributed to studies translating neuroendocrine discoveries into clinical applications. This includes discovery work underpinning the development of NK3r antagonists for menopausal flushes, now approved by the FDA/EMA/MHRA/NICE.
A major focus of his current work is the clinical application of kisspeptin, alongside broader themes in reproductive and bone endocrinology. His team’s research has been funded by the NIHR, Wellcome Trust, MRC and industry grants. He has presented invited lectures internationally, including at ICE/ICN/ENDO/ECE/BES/BMS and as ‘Visiting Professor’ at Harvard.
He contributes to international health policy and has presented to senior NHS and government leaders, including the UK Health Minister. In addition, he served on the SfE Science Committee and currently serves on the Endocrine Society Research Committee, SfE Council, and Pregnancy-Associated Osteoporosis UK Committee. He was recently appointed Bone & Calcium Co-Lead for the European Society of Endocrinology.
Alongside his clinical work as Head of the Imperial Endocrine Bone Unit, he is Head of Academic Tutoring at Imperial and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He received the SfE Outstanding Teacher Award for his educational contributions.
His clinical and academic work has been recognised through international prizes, including several Outstanding Abstract Awards and the Best Oral Presentation in Reproductive Science from the Endocrine Society, the BSN Harbuz Prize, and the SfE Early Career Prize, Clinical Endocrinology Trust Prize and Leadership Development Award. Most recently he was awarded the Royal College of Physicians-NIHR Research Delivery Prize. His work has attracted international media attention across print, broadcast and documentary platforms including BBC, CNN, Newsweek and Reuters.
