Dr. Guido Lastra is a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Missouri and a staff endocrinologist at the Harry S. Truman Veterans’ Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He received his medical degree from the National University of Colombia, where he also completed residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. He subsequently completed additional residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Missouri.
Dr. Lastra’s academic career has focused on the pathophysiology of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and diabetic kidney disease. His research has contributed to the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms linking metabolic disorders with vascular dysfunction, inflammation, and cardiovascular risk. He has served as principal investigator on multiple NIH- and VA-funded research projects and has been actively involved in major clinical trials evaluating therapies for diabetic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease.
He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications, numerous review articles and book chapters, and has been an invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings. His work has appeared in leading journals in endocrinology, metabolism, hypertension, cardiovascular medicine, and physiology.
In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. Lastra is a dedicated clinician, educator, and mentor. For more than a decade, he has trained endocrinology fellows, internal medicine residents, medical students, and research trainees, while maintaining a busy clinical practice. His career reflects a longstanding commitment to advancing scientific discovery, improving patient care, and fostering the next generation of endocrinologists and physician-scientists.
