Bass received his postgraduate training as a fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Chicago and moved to Northwestern in 2000, where over the ensuing 20 years he rose to become Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Molecular Medicine and Metabolism at the Feinberg School of Medicine while also serving on the faculty of the Department of Neurobiology. In 2011 he was appointed to the Charles F. Kettering Professorship in addition to leading an NIH-funded training program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hormone Action, while being recognized as a top cited researcher in circadian and metabolic research (H! index 63). Bass has served on the scientific planning committees of the Endocrine and American Diabetes Societies, as organizer and co-chair of numerous NIH-sponsored symposia on circadian rhythms and metabolism, including Gordon Conferences on circadian rhythms and the Society for Biological Rhythms, and as organizer and co-chair of the Japan Fujihara international symposium on molecular clocks, sleep and metabolism. He has served as an editorial board member of journals such as Genes and Development and Cell Metabolism, and presently he serves as Chair of the NIH study section Integrated Physiology of Obesity and Diabetes. In recognition of his research accomplishments, Bass has received several honors, including membership in Alpha Omega Alpha and the Association of American Physicians, and he has been invited to deliver honorary lectureships at numerous institutions, including the University of Chicago, the Central Society for Clinical Research, the Japanese Endocrine Society, the Weizmann Institute, INSERM Paris, New York University, the Jackson Laboratories, St Louis University, Albert Einstein, the Salk Institute, and the Nobel Forum of the Karolinska Institute.
