Michael McDermott MD is the Lucas Family Endowed Chair in Endocrinology and Diabetes and Tenured Professor of Medicine and Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP).
He graduated in 1974 from Georgia Tech, where he was a scholarship athlete on the football team. He attended Tulane University Medical School on a US Army scholarship. Internal Medicine Residency and Endocrinology Fellowship were completed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He served 20 years in the US Army and retired with the rank of Colonel; during his service, he was deployed to the Sinai Peninsula with the Multinational Force and Observers 1982-1983, was Endocrinology Chief at Fitzsimons and Endocrinology Consultant to the US Army Surgeon General from 1994 to1997.
He joined the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1997. He has received the Outstanding Instructor, Outstanding Clinical Teacher and Medical Student Teaching Awards. He received the Distinguished Physician Award by the Endocrine Society in 2013. At the University of Colorado Hospital, he has received the Outstanding Physician Award twice, Distinguished Service Award, and the Excellence in Clinical Innovation Award. He received the Department of Medicine Distinguished Physician Award in 2022 and was inducted into the Clinical Excellence Society in 2024.
