Susan J. Mandel, MD, MPH is the Sylvan H. Eisman Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. An internationally recognized expert in thyroid disease, her clinical focus is thyroid neoplasia, and her research centers on the use of ultrasound in the evaluation and management of thyroid nodules and cancer.
Dr. Mandel has played a central role in shaping national and international thyroid guidelines. She served on the writing groups for the three previous American Thyroid Association (ATA) Guidelines for Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer and is co-chair of the 2026 ATA Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid Nodules. She also contributed to the ATA and Endocrine Society guidelines on the management of thyroid disease during pregnancy. She founded and directed the ATA and Endocrine Society ultrasound workshops, advancing hands-on endocrine education nationally
Dr. Mandel served as President of the Endocrine Society (2018–2019) and previously as President of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She currently serves as Secretary of the International Society of Endocrinology. During her 21 years as Fellowship Program Director at Penn, she trained more than 70 fellows—10 of whom have gone on to become Endocrine Fellowship Program Directors.
Her contributions have been recognized with the Endocrine Society Distinguished Educator Award, the ATA Women in Thyroidology Woman of the Year Award (2019), the AACE H. Jack Baskin Endocrine Teaching Award, and most recently, the ATA Lewis E. Braverman Award. Dr. Mandel has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, including in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Annals of Internal Medicine, and has written textbook chapters for Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and Werner & Ingbar’s The Thyroid.
