Prof. dr. W. Edward Visser (endocrinologist) is chief of division of Endocrinology at the Erasmus Medical Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands). He also heads the Erasmus MC Thyroid Center, including the research laboratory and runs a general endocrine clinic as well as specialized thyroid clinics.
Edward has great interest in understanding normal and disordered cellular thyroid hormone signaling. His research group performs translational and clinical studies in this field. Particularly, they are interested in phenotyping patients, elucidating mechanisms of disease and developing a therapy for MCT8 deficiency.
Edward served for several years on different committees, including the Executive Committee of the European Thyroid Association (2019 – 2023) and the Steering Committee Endo-ERN (2020 – present) as well as on several program organizing committees (American Thyroid Association (2021 – 2024), European Society for Endocrinology (2025 – 2026) and the Endocrine Society (2022 – 2025)). Moreover, he served on various (inter)national guideline committees.
He has received different awards including the Harington De Visscher prize of the European Thyroid Association (2021) and the Van Meter Award of the American Thyroid Association (2025).
