Assistant Professor
KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
Stockholm, Sweden
My name is Aida Collado Sánchez, and I am an Assistant Professor at Karolinska Institutet, where I investigate how red blood cells and erythrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles contribute to endothelial dysfunction in type 2 diabetes. I obtained my PhD in Biomedicine and Pharmacy from the University of Valencia in 2019 and moved to Karolinska Institutet in 2020 to pursue postdoctoral research. In 2024, I became Assistant Professor.
My research has demonstrated that increased uptake of erythrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles is a key driver of vascular injury in diabetes, identifying novel mechanisms underlying diabetic vascular complications. I have published extensively in leading D1 journals, including Journal of Clinical Investigation, Diabetes, and British Journal of Pharmacology, establishing a coherent translational research profile focused on diabetic vascular disease.
My scientific independence is reflected in my leadership roles, supervision of PhD and master’s students, and recognition through competitive international awards, including the AHA Paul Dudley White Scholar Award, the Alvarenga Award, and the Young Investigator Award from the Spanish Society of Pharmacology. I have also been invited to present my work at major international conferences such as European Association for the Study of Diabetes, European Society of Cardiology, and American Heart Association, reflecting the visibility and impact of my contributions within the cardiometabolic research community.
My long-term goal is to develop therapeutic strategies targeting erythrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles to prevent and treat diabetes-associated endothelial dysfunction. I am also deeply committed to teaching and mentorship, contributing to doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s programmes.
