Dr. Joanna E. Burdette earned her B.S. from Emory University in Biology and her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern under the direction of Dr. Teresa K. Woodruff. She is currently the Edward and Josephine Mika Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She also serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the Retzky College of Pharmacy. Her research has helped to develop three-dimensional models of the fallopian tube to define early events responsible for ovarian cancer formation. She has leveraged organ-on-chip technology and imaging mass spectrometry to investigate the origin of ovarian cancer and the role of ovulation in oncogenesis. She is also actively screening natural products for anti-cancer activity with a focus on ovarian cancer. She is currently the co-leader of the Cancer Biology Program of the UIC Cancer Center.
