W. Timothy Garvey is an endocrinologist and the Butterworth Professor and University Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is recognized for his research in the metabolic, molecular and genetic pathogenesis of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity, and is an active clinical trialist for obesity and diabetes medications. He has authored over 380 publications. Dr. Garvey has advanced our understanding of mechanisms causing human insulin resistance involving molecules such as GLUT 4 glucose transporters, adiponectin, NR4A nuclear orphan receptors, and TRIB3; obesity as a disease; and medical models to improve patient care. He has been the lead author on the AACE Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity, co-chair of the 2025 AACE obesity algorithm, co-author of AACE guidelines on diabetes, NASH, and bariatric surgery, co-author on the Lancet Commission on Obesity and the ADA Standards of Care for Obesity and ADA nutrition recommendations. He has helped address the rational use of newer second-generation obesity medications within the context of a complications-centric approach. He is an elected member of ASCI and AAP and awarded Master of both AACE and the ABOM.
