MON-248 - Hormonal and Anthropometric Changes before the Onset of Menarche

Purpose: The potential for height growth is known to decrease to approximately 2–6 cm after menarche, and many children and their parents are concerned about early menarche. This study aimed to identify parameters that could predict the onset of menarche.

Methods: Anthropometric data (height, weight, and growth velocity), chronological and bone age, Tanner stage, and biochemical data (serum LH, FSH, estradiol, and progesterone levels) were collected at 12 months and 6 months before the onset of menarche in 36 girls who visited the growth clinic of a university hospital between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2024. Data obtained at 12 months and 6 months before menarche were compared using a paired t-test with SPSS version 28.

Results: Comparisons between data collected 12 months and 6 months before menarche were as follows. The mean height growth velocities were 2.97 cm and 2.91 cm, and the mean weight gains were 1.68 kg and 1.83 kg over 6 months, respectively (P = NS). The averages of the bone ages were 12.00 and 12.25 years, respectively (P = NS). Tanner stage was stage 3 in all participants at both time points. Serum LH levels increased from 2.33 ± 1.25 to 4.36 ± 2.23 mIU/mL (P < 0.01). Serum FSH levels increased from 4.24 ± 1.59 to 5.93 ± 2.05 mIU/mL (P < 0.05). Serum estradiol levels increased from 22.54 ± 12.18 to 44.68 ± 19.31 pg/mL (P < 0.01). Serum progesterone levels increased from 0.12 ± 0.12 to 0.19 ± 0.14 ng/mL, but this difference was not statistically significant (P = NS).

Conclusion: Periodic measurements of baseline serum LH, FSH, and estradiol levels are more informative than anthropometric data for predicting the early onset of menarche in girls.
