Background
Hyperprolactinemia—one of the most common hormonal imbalance disorders in patients with partial empty or empty sella turcica—may be associated with suppressed dopamine secretion due to a compression of intrasellar structures by the suprasellar cistern. The aim of this study was to assess factors potentially conducive to this phenomenon.
Material and methods
Forty-three patients with partial empty or empty sella underwent a prospective evaluation, including pituitary magnetic resonance imaging and hormone level testing.
Results
Hyperprolactinemia was observed in four patients (9.3%). Univariate logistic regression showed a significant relationship between both age (OR 0.877 [0.773–0.995]; p=0.04) and weight (OR 0.83 [0.701–0.982]; p=0.03) and hyperprolactinemia; other parameters evaluated in this model showed no such relationship. These were pituitary craniocaudal diameter (OR 1.868 [0.649–5.300]; p=0.25), pituitary volume [mm³] (OR 1.01 [0.992–1.013]; p=0.611), sella turcica craniocaudal diameter (OR 0.956 [0.608–1.503]; p=0.85), stalk displacement (OR 0.773 [0.099–6.061]; p=0.806), sex (OR 0.001 [0.00–0.00]; p=0.997), and body mass index (OR 0.597 [0.338–1.053]; p=0.075).
Conclusions
Younger patients with empty or partial empty sella turcica may be at a higher risk of hyperprolactinemia, which necessitates regular clinical and hormonal assessments.
